Tens of thousands of acres of Florida wilderness (including a working ranch) have been purchased by the state in it’s largest-ever purchase of land for environmental conservation. Nearly 74,000 mostly undeveloped acres were purchased in southwestern Florida, creating an almost unbroken stretch of brush and swamp wilderness from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico. The area is home to panthers, bears, and other native wildlife.
The owners of the ranch originally purchased 91,000 acres, and will retain 17,000 acres to build 19,000 homes for a new town that their promising will be a “shining example of environmentally responsible development in the 21st century.” You can read the full article from the Environmental News Network.
