New Cosmetic Line Launches To Help Fight Against HIV/AIDS

By 2005, the number of those infected with HIV/AIDS had grown to more than 40 million with 24-27% undiagnosed or unaware of their HIV infection. With statistics proving that HIV/AIDS are on the rise, James Pierce Cosmetics is responding by announcing that a portion of all sales each month will be donated to different HIV/AIDS organizations and foundations, along with other various GLBT community organizations.

“My goal with James Pierce Cosmetics was not only to create a company that provided top quality men’s skin care , but also to create a company that cared enough to give back to the community,” states Blake Kennedy, President and CEO of James Pierce Cosmetics. “I feel that the fight for a cure and the fight for equality and understanding are just as important as the products my company produces.”

James Pierce Cosmetics skin care line is designed for and by the GLBT Community. Kennedy envisioned a skin care line that targeted the community by listening to what they want and striving to create the product. In order to give back to the community, James Pierce Cosmetics will donate 10% of profits every month to various organizations and foundations throughout the United States and Canada in order to help find a cure and educate against HIV/AIDS.

“I do not feel that I can change the world with my one small company,” states Kennedy. “But I do hope that I can make it a little better with my devotion to what ‘We’ stand for and represent.”

The James Pierce skin care products range from revitalizing eye gels, to facial scrubs or cleansers, muscle rubs, wrinkle relaxant creams, moisturizers, shave gels, liquid eye liners and pencils, all of which were specifically made for this community. CLOTHING OF THE AMERICAN MIND PRESENTS VOTE 4 CHANGE: A BENEFIT FOR VOTER ACTION

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Clothing of the American Mind (COTAM) will present VOTE 4 CHANGE, a benefit for VoterAction.org, in an effort to educate and register voters and raise awareness of the Nov. 7 mid-term elections.  The event, which will also serve as a celebration of the grand opening of COTAM’s flagship retail store, will unfold from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. at 1284 West Sunset Blvd., in

Echo
Park.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by DJ Lillyanne, comedian Natasha Leggero and sketch comedy crew The People Who Do That.  Featured speakers include Holly Jacobson, co-director of Voter Action, and Sheri Myers, co-author of Cheated!            VOTE 4 CHANGE exemplifies Clothing of the American Mind’s mission to see that Americans make their voices heard on Nov. 7.  All proceeds raised will benefit Voter Action, a not-for-profit entity that provides legal, research and organizational support to ensure election integrity.Voter Action’s current focus is to protect as many jurisdictions as possible from the use of privatized electronic voting systems, which have a record of inaccuracy and unreliability and have been shown to pose significant security risks.  Emergency legislation to protect
America’s votes was introduced this week in both the Senate and House, the result of documented voting irregularities in both the 2000 and 2004 general elections.
VOTE 4 CHANGE participants will receive a warm welcome from Voter Action co-director Holly Robinson, who will be joined in her remarks by Sheri Myers, co-author of “Cheated!,” the acclaimed comic book-style account of the controversial 2004 vote in Ohio. Also scheduled to appear are standup purveyor Natasha Leggero, former host of MTV’s “The 70’s House,” who has also been seen on “Reno 911!,” “It’s Always Sunny in
Philadelphia,” “Gay Robot” and various late-night talk shows.  Her fellow performers, The People Who Do That, are perhaps best known for National Corporate Radio, a scathing parody of National Public Radio (NPR).
Donations collected during VOTE 4 CHANGE (suggested $5 – $10) will go directly to Voter Action.  Attendees should expect to enjoy a stimulating soirée of progressive dialogue, plentiful wine and hors d’oeuvres, gift bags, shopping opportunities, and, most importantly, voter education and registration.Clothing of the American Mind began creating hip, eco-conscious fashions for politically progressive people in 2004.  The company recently introduced its first line of organic-cotton items for women, men and children.Born of a grassroots effort, COTAM prides itself on adhering to Fair Trade, sweatshop-free, made-in-the-U.S.A principles.  It affords consumers an opportunity to flex their purchasing power on behalf of democratic action and environmental preservation, among other worthy causes, while engaging in everyday activism simply by getting dressed.  Since its inception, the company has donated more than $20,000 to progressive causes and candidates committed to social and political justice.Visit Clothing of the American Mind online at www.cotam.org and at its newly inaugurated retail space, located at 1284 West Sunset Blvd.

Community Service Events Made Easy: The Volunteer Family Provides Guide to Event Planning for Nonprofits

If you have ever considered organizing an event in your community but weren’t sure where to start, a new resource is available to help you take the leap. The Volunteer Family Guide to Event Planning offers direction from stage one, identifying a nonprofit organization and brainstorming ideas for how best to support their cause, to project completion. Sample letters, forms, and press releases are included. The Volunteer Family staff will assist you throughout the process and whenever you need an extra boost of confidence.

Michelle Ellwood, a community volunteer that has followed the Event Planning Guide, commented, “I was amazed at how easy The Volunteer Family made this process. I was able to help my church, teach my children about giving back, and spend time with friends, all at the same time!”

“The Event Planning Guide takes a typically complex process and lays it out simply. We help volunteers with every step of the process, including finding an appropriate event location, recruiting volunteers, acquiring supplies, promoting the event, finding a source of funding, and reflecting on an event’s success,” said Heather Jack, founder of The Volunteer Family.
